8th Badr International Ethiopian Muslims Federation Convention Toronto, Canada

Badr International Ethiopian Muslims Federation 8th annual convention which was held from July 24th to July 27th 2008 has been successfully completed. The convention was well attended and many Muslims of Ethiopian origin from the United Sates, Canada and Europe showed up in droves and as such we thank Allah (SW) for making this year’s convention successful. To reflect the true dimension of its global reach, this year’s convention was attended by prominent speakers from Ethiopia and Europe to deliberate on the conference theme “Ethiopian Muslims History: Opportunities and Challenges”. It was particularly gratifying to the convention participants to be able to hear from Mufti Haji Omer, President of the Addis Ababa Islamic Council (Majlis) who traveled all the way from Ethiopia to Toronto to attend this year’s convention. Historian Dr. Lapiso Shelemo has been an addition to the uniqueness of this years conference. There were also many Islamic scholars who were motivational speakers who lectured about Akhl'aq, Ikhl'as and general knowledge of the Deen.

As it is customary, the fundraising event on the third day, July 26, 2006 was successful. The event demonstrated the spirit of cooperation among the various communities in raising funds for Badr and the Hosting Community. While many actively participated in the fundraising event, First Hijrah Foundation of Washington DC, Negashi Islamic Centre of Atlanta,  and The Ethiopian Muslim Association of Seattle (EMAS)  were among the leading contributors of this year's fundraising.  After a close race between Washington DC and Seattle,  EMAS  has broken the record for this year. May Allah continue to shower His blessings upon all participants for their effort.

The convention started on Thursday, July 24, 2008 by a Quran recitation by Br. Seid Mohammed and followed by welcoming speech and “Anashid” in Amharic by our students.  The content and presentation of the welcoming poem reflecting the theme of the convention has kept the audience captivated. As Badr continues to grow, the youth population is also increasing in many folds. Therefore, in anticipation of the huge turn out of youth, the host community has put in place a parallel program that focused on youth issues with many dynamic speakers addressing their challenges.  Apart from the lectures, the youth coordinating committee was able to arrange a field trip to the Toronto Centre  Islands in which more than 250 youth members have participated.  The response to the idea of visiting the Toronto Central  Islands was overwhelming and the youth coordinating committee has executed its plan meticulously in ferrying the various age groups to and from the Islands.

As part of Badr's continuous effort to appreciate and recognize the outstanding communities and individuals among its member communities and leaders, Badr has presented an Award to the Nejashi Community Center of Atlanta, the First Hijrah Foundation of Washington DC from among communities; as well as,  Brother Najib Mohamed and Brother Mensur Nuru

for their individual contribution towards Badr and the community at large. The community representatives were able to receive Badr 2008 Award from Mufti Haji Omer.

Finally, on Friday August 1st, 2008  the Ethiopian Canadian Muslim Community has organized farewell ceremony at its location for Mufit Haji Omer and all attendees expressed their gratitude and appreciation for Mufti Haji Omer for his continuous contribution toward the Ethiopian Muslims’ affairs. On his side, Mufti Haji Omer was pleased to see such a vibrant community and appealed that the Muslim Community to remain engaged in development affairs of the country in general and the Muslim society in particular.  Mufti Haji Omer left for Ethiopia on Friday, August 1st, 2008 and community leaders saw him off at the airport.

In conclusion, such an event would not be successful without the active participation of the local community members.  In recognition of this fact, the Ethiopian Canadian Community is holding an appreciation night on Sunday, August 3, 2008 at 5:00 pm and we are extending our invitation to all those who actively participated in making this year’s convention successful. To read  Badr Statement Click

May Allah reward those involved and bless our community to continue serving our Ummah.

Next year's conference will be in Seattle, Washington in Sha'Allah
